History of Aya Yorgi Church
Aya Yorgi Church is part of the Greek Orthodox Monastery of Agios Georgios, named after Saint George, an important figure in Christianity.
According to tradition, the monastery's roots reach back to the Byzantine period. Sources often connect the site with the year 963 and the reign of Byzantine Emperor Nikephoros Phokas.
Why Aya Yorgi Hill Is So Famous
Aya Yorgi Hill is one of Büyükada's most impressive viewpoints. From the top, you can see the Marmara Sea, surrounding islands and the Istanbul skyline from a wide angle.
The climb can be tiring, especially in warm weather, but the view at the end makes the walk one of the island's most rewarding experiences.
Wishing Tradition and Visit Days
The church draws many visitors on 23 April and 24 September. On these dates, people from different backgrounds visit the church, light candles and make wishes.
Many believe that walking up the hill quietly and making a wish at the church carries a special meaning. This tradition gives Aya Yorgi a spiritual atmosphere beyond its historic identity.
How to Get to Aya Yorgi
From the center of Büyükada, visitors first head toward Lunapark Square. From there, the final part of the route continues on foot uphill.
Comfortable shoes are important. In summer, carrying water and avoiding the hottest hours of the day will make the walk much easier.
Aya Yorgi Route in Your Büyükada Day
The Aya Yorgi route is more than a church visit; it combines nature, history and views in one of Büyükada's most memorable walks.
For day visitors, the hill can become one of the strongest moments of the island. After the walk, returning to the center for a meal, coffee or dessert completes the day comfortably.
A Dolci Büyükada Break After the Walk
After returning from Aya Yorgi Hill to the center of Büyükada, a relaxed food or coffee break is a natural way to complete the route.
Close to the pier, Dolci Büyükada welcomes you with breakfast, coffee, desserts, pizza, pasta, salads and warm kitchen options after your island walk.
History, Views and the Island Spirit
Aya Yorgi is more than a place to visit; it is a route where Büyükada's history, spirituality and natural beauty can be felt together.
Walking up to Aya Yorgi brings you closer to the island's memory, while the view at the end turns the climb into one of the most memorable parts of a Büyükada day.
