History of the Büyükada Greek Orphanage
The building was designed at the end of the 19th century by the renowned architect Alexander Vallaury. It was first planned as a luxury hotel and casino, but it was never used for that purpose.
It was later purchased and donated to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Istanbul, opening as an orphanage in 1903. After nearly sixty years of service, it closed in 1964 and has remained unused ever since.
